Staying Healthy While Traveling: 8 Strategies That Help Me Enjoy a Vacation Without Losing My Healthy Habits
I love to travel.
Whether it's flying across the world for work or taking time away to celebrate with family and friends, travel is one of my favorite ways to create lasting memories.
But if I'm being honest, staying healthy while traveling isn't always easy.
Recently, I traveled to Rhode Island and Boston, MA to celebrate my 50th birthday. It was a wonderful trip filled with incredible food, beautiful scenery, and time with people I love. It was also a great reminder of just how challenging it can be to stick to healthy habits when you're away from home.
Travel has a way of disrupting even the best routines.
Airport terminals are filled with quick, convenient options—but most are highly processed and loaded with sugar. Airplane snacks rarely resemble real food. Vacation can quickly turn into the mindset of, "I'm on holiday—I deserve it!" Suddenly you're saying yes to dessert every night, having an extra glass of wine, drinking less water, and ordering the fries simply because everyone else at the table is.
Before you know it, you've spent several days making choices that leave you feeling sluggish instead of energized.
The good news?
You don't have to eat perfectly while you travel. Afterall, food experiences are one of my favorite joys of travel!
However, I've learned that if you don’t want to go completely off the rails, the key is to set yourself up for success before your trip begins. A little planning allows you to enjoy your vacation while still feeling your best.
Here are eight strategies that I use whenever I travel.
1. Pack Healthy Snacks Before You Leave
This is probably the easiest habit with the biggest payoff.
I never assume I'll find healthy options at the airport or during a long travel day. Instead, I pack snacks before I leave home.
Some of my favorites include:
Mixed nuts (Preferably Raw and Unsalted)
Fresh fruit (think apples, bananas, and oranges)
Protein bars with minimal added sugar (Larabar is one of my favorites!)
Roasted chickpeas
Individual nut butter packets
Grass Fed Beef Jerky (I like Epic Beef Sea Salt + Black Pepper)
Having nutritious snacks within reach means I'm much less likely to buy or eat whatever happens to be available when hunger strikes.
2. Plan Your Meals Before You're Hungry
One of the biggest mistakes we make while traveling is waiting until we're starving before deciding where to eat.
When that happens, convenience usually wins.
Instead, spend a few minutes researching restaurants before you arrive. Most menus are available online, making it easy to identify restaurants that offer plenty of vegetables, lean protein, and fresh ingredients.
If you're driving, map out healthy stops along your route instead of relying on fast-food exits.
A little planning removes the stress—and the temptation—of making decisions when your energy is already low.
3. Choose Accommodations with a Kitchen
Whenever I'm staying somewhere for several days, I try to book accommodations with at least a small kitchen or kitchenette.
One grocery stop at the beginning of the trip gives me everything I need for simple breakfasts, healthy snacks, and a few easy meals.
Not only does this help me eat more nutritious foods, but it also saves money and gives me flexibility throughout the trip.
4. Build Movement Into Your Vacation
Exercise doesn't have to mean finding a hotel gym.
Some of my favorite workouts while traveling have simply been exploring a new city on foot.
Walk the waterfront.
Visit a local park.
Hike a nearby trail.
Rent a bike.
You'll burn calories, reduce stress, and often experience a destination in a much more meaningful way than you would from the seat of a car.
5. Stay Hydrated (Especially If You're Flying)
Travel makes it surprisingly easy to become dehydrated.
Air travel, warm weather, alcohol, and long days sightseeing can all leave you drinking far less water than usual.
I now make hydration one of my priorities.
I carry a reusable water bottle, refill it often, and try to drink water consistently throughout the day—especially if I'm enjoying a glass of wine with dinner.
Your body—and your energy levels—will thank you.
6. Choose Simple, Healthy Swaps
One of the best parts of traveling is experiencing local cuisine.
I never want healthy eating to take away from that experience.
Instead of trying everything at every meal, I choose the foods that truly feel special and then make healthy swaps for the rest.
If there's a famous seafood restaurant, fresh lobster roll, or local bakery everyone recommends, I'll absolutely enjoy it.
But I don't feel obligated to eat everything that comes with a dish. One of my favorite travel strategies is to look for easy substitutions. Many restaurants are happy to swap French fries for steamed vegetables, a side salad, fresh fruit, or another healthier option—you just have to ask.
These small changes can make a surprising difference over the course of a trip without making you feel like you're missing out. Pair a lean protein with vegetables instead of fries, ask for dressings or sauces on the side, or choose grilled instead of fried when possible.
Remember, healthy eating isn't about making every meal perfect. It's about making the healthier choice that's available to you in that moment.
Choosing intentionally allows me to enjoy the experience without coming home feeling like I need to "start over."
7. Prioritize Sleep and Recovery
Travel can be exciting—but it can also be exhausting.
Late nights, unfamiliar beds, changing time zones, and packed itineraries all take a toll.
Whenever possible, I try to protect my sleep by maintaining a consistent bedtime, limiting alcohol in the evening, and packing earplugs for noisy hotels.
A well-rested body makes healthier decisions the next day.
8. Remember That One Indulgent Meal Doesn't Define Your Trip
This may be the most important tip of all.
Many people fall into an all-or-nothing mindset while traveling.
They eat one indulgent meal and decide they've "blown it," so they continue making choices that don't make them feel their best for the rest of the vacation.
Healthy living doesn't work that way.
Every meal is a new opportunity to nourish your body.
Enjoy the birthday cake.
Share the dessert.
Celebrate the special moments.
Then simply return to the habits that help you feel energized.
The Bottom Line
Travel is meant to be enjoyed—not feared.
You don't have to choose between creating wonderful memories and taking care of your health.
With a little planning and a flexible mindset, you can enjoy incredible meals, celebrate special occasions, and still come home feeling refreshed instead of depleted.
As I often remind my health coaching clients, lasting wellness isn't about being perfect. It's about making intentional choices most of the time and giving yourself grace along the way.
Because the healthiest lifestyle is the one you can enjoy wherever life takes you.
